What is 2+3?

As we move toward summer, our Florida temperatures are rising.  Families and children are gravitating to the water to cool down and enjoy the outdoors.  It’s why people live in Florida!

Unfortunately the months of May and June are traditionally Florida’s deadliest months for drowning accidents.  In fact, more children under the age of 5-years-old die from drowning here in Florida, than any other state in the nation.  These tragic accidents can happen anywhere, even in the bathtub, but more often in your own backyard swimming pool,  a hotel swimming pool, or at the beach, lake or pond.

Here are some safety tips from the Mayo Clinic to protect your children from a drowning accident:

  • Invest in a pool fence that’s at least 4 feet tall
  • Block pool and hot tub access with secure motorized covers
  • Teach your children how to swim
  • Remove pool toys so your child isn’t trying to retrieve them
  • Beware of drains
  • Never leave your child unsupervised near a pool or any body of water
  • Wear an approved  life jacket while riding in a boat or fishing
  • The first descent into any body of water should be feet first

Additional information on water safety is available by visiting the National Drowning Prevention Alliance website or in an informative article on drown proofing posted in our Florida Child Injury Lawyer child safety library.
